Restaurant Details
You'll start to imagine that Mary I is on the throne again as you climb the winding 16th-century staircase to the Tower Restaurant, with its panelled walls, open fireplaces and shuttered windows. But there are no Tudor-style banquets here - this restaurant won its AA rosette for the excellence of its traditional Scottish food. The menu changes, but to give you an idea, how about a plate of smoked salmon to start, followed by lemon and garlic-marinated free-range chicken with anna potatoes and courgette ribbons, then strawberry millefeuille to finish? A children's menu is also available. In the morning, the hotel serves both Scottish and continental breakfast. However much you've eaten the night before, you're bound to be tempted by the fresh fruit, freshly baked bread and pastries and comb honey. Dinner is served from 6.30pm to 10pm and breakfast is served from 7am to 10am. The dress code is smart casual - jeans and trainers are not allowed, and diners are asked to switch off their mobile phones. If you'd rather go downstairs than up, head to the cellars to discover the Vaulted Bar, three connected rooms with large open fireplaces, antique paintings, leather couches and wing-backed armchairs. Main meals, light bites, sandwiches, baguettes and salads are available in the bar, as well as hot and cold soft and alcoholic drinks. All the coffee is Fairtrade - and when you order a cafetiere of coffee or a cup of tea, you'll get some shortbread to tuck into too.
Room Service
Room service is available 24 hours a day, but the full room service menu, which includes main meals, sandwiches, salads, desserts and drinks, is only available from 8am to 10pm. A limited menu is available between 10pm and 8am. There is also a children's room service menu, with dishes including cheese on toast, boiled egg with soldiers, sausages and mash, and pasta in tomato sauce.
Directions
From the Forth Road Bridge: Follow the road from the bridge to the roundabout. Take the third exit off the roundabout. Follow the road through Newton until you come to the sign for the M9. Turn left, going under the motorway. Follow the road over the humpbacked bridge and through two sets of traffic lights. At the T-junction turn right, then take the first left. Follow the road through Ecclesmachan until you come to another T-junction, when you should turn right. Go straight on at the mini roundabout. Houstoun House will be on your left. |
